Calmodulin (CaM) is the primary calcium sensor and binding protein of eukaryotic cells. It operates by binding to and regulating the function of target proteins or calmodulin binding proteins (CaMBPs). We have isolated genes encoding many novel CaMBPs from the social amoebozoan Dictyostelium discoideum. We study their localization, developmental expression and cellular and developmental functions via over-expression and KOs. Recently the role of specific nuclear/nucleolar proteins has become a focus. For example, the novel CaMBP nucleomorphin that is involved in regulating nuclear number binds to various other nuclear and nucleolar proteins. Another CaMBP has been shown to be part of the extracellular matrix where peptides excised from it are involved in regulating cell movement.
