TITLE:

Why Do Plant Stems Grow? Discovering Blind Spots and New Molecular Mechanisms of stem elongation in rice.

ABSTRACT: Plants are composed of four primary organs: leaves, flowers, stems, and roots. Among these, the stem is crucial not only as a conduit for transporting water, minerals, and photosynthetic products, but also as a support for leaves and flowers, determining the plant’s height and growth form. In crops, the thickness, length, and strength of the stem are essential agricultural traits related to lodging resistance, making stem control a key breeding objective. How does the stem elongate? While it’s known that the plant hormone gibberellin positively regulates cell proliferation and elongation in stem, gibberellin alone cannot fully explain stem elongation. We have identified both accelerators and brakes in stem elongation. In this seminar, I will introduce the new machinimas of stem elongation in rice.
