CSB undergraduates toured the Michener Institute of Education in Toronto’s Discovery District on March 10th, 2025 to learn about the programs offered at the Michener as members of our second year learning community (SLC) program. The SLC brings together like-minded students to promote networking and academic development, including visiting career-related workplaces.

The Michener Institute is a unique school paired with the University Health Network (UHN), offering innovative programs directed at educating future healthcare professionals.

Members of Cell & Systems Biology’s SLC experienced Michener’s approach to medical education on the tour. Michener’s classes allow participants to process real patient samples in their labs and to work in diverse clinical placements to qualify them for high quality careers after graduation.

SLC students handled advanced tools and heard about the techniques used by medical professionals on their visit to the cytology, genetics, nuclear imaging, and medical laboratories. This included prepared human tissue samples, genetics testing equipment, nuclear imaging facilities, and patient blood samples.

Michener offers advanced diplomas which are directly tailored to the needs of the Canadian healthcare including Diagnostic Cytology, Genetics Technology, MRI, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Respiratory Therapy and Radiological Technology

SLC members engaged with Michener faculty, discussed the programs, and learned about the potential careers the Michener can provide to U of T graduates.

The SLC program connects students with alumni and faculty, organizes visit career-related workplaces, and provides access to upper-year peer mentors through bi-weekly meetings.
